  1. What is SCLEROTHERAPY?

Properly done, Sclerotherapy is carefully locating the source of the vein problem, then injecting of a tiny amount of a special solution in an attempt to close the abnormal veins. Normal veins will pick up the flow, the pressure in the veins will be reduced and thus leg circulation will improve. At the Vein Clinic, we use only FDA-approved solutions.

  2. What are Spider Veins?

These are small, thread-like, reddish, purplish or bluish unsightly vessels. Slightly larger green veins called "feeder veins" feed blood into these vessels.

  3. What are Varicose Veins?

Large, often bulging veins that usually have a zigzag pattern. Varicose veins are the result of reflux and abnormal flow of blood from the deep vein. This abnormal flow is the result of the incompetence of barriers, called valves, between the deep and superficial vein systems.

  4. What causes the color of our veins?

What you actually see is the color of the blood running through the veins. The veins themselves are white.

  5. What are the symptoms of vein disease?

In addition to their embarrassing, unsightly appearance, symptoms can include burning, itching, pain, leg fatigue and heaviness, throbbing, swelling, muscle cramps, even ankle sores and bleeding. Unfortunately, many physicians do not recognize vein problems as the cause of many of these symptoms. Non-surgical options for treatments of varicose veins are "endovenous laser therapy" and/or "ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy".

  6. Who can get vein disease?

Just about anyone. Heredity plays the biggest role. 10% of men and 50% of women totaling over 80 million Americans are affected. As might be expected, any condition that puts strain on flow of blood from the legs toward the heart can aggravate the condition. This includes, but is not limited to pregnancy, standing for long periods, obesity, and extended sitting. For each individual, it is important to accurately identify the cause of their particular situation.

  11. Do treated veins come back?

Veins that are effectively treated by an appropriate method do not usually come back.

  12. Are there different treatment methods?

Yes. Sclerotherapy has become the most popular and effective treatment among non-surgical methods. Laser can only be used for small veins of a certain size and has not shown consistent results as yet. In most cases, Sclerotherapy on larger feeder veins must be done prior to any laser treatment. Having large varicose veins does not always mean a need for surgery in every case. For some, phlebectomy, a new simple and effective vein removal procedure, can be done in the office setting without general anesthesia.

  13. Is there much pain involved?

In skilled hands, with gentle injection methods and use of a very fine disposable needle, many patients’ pre-treatment anxieties vanish. There is surprisingly little discomfort, described as mild stinging in most cases.

  14. What happens to my circulation if some of my veins are closed?

As a result of closing diseased veins, the many good veins will take over the flow of blood and your circulation will improve. For most patients, this means disappearance of their leg discomfort.

  15. Can I continue my routine activities after a treatment?

Most patients are able to continue to work, even engage in active sports, immediately after sclerotherapy treatments.

  16. What about unsightly veins on the face, arms and breasts?

In many cases, in only one session, these veins can be successfully treated by sclerotherapy.

  17. How effective is laser in treatment of leg vein problems?

"Endovenous laser therapy" is very effective for treatment of varicose veins, but other laser devices (that use a handpiece device on skin) have a very limited effectiveness on spider veins and not at all effective for varicose veins(with a high possibilty of the skin scars and pain during treatment).
